about

For GL (George Burt)

For GL is a piece for two double basses or two cellos and a miscellaneous ensemble of improvisers who act as a kind of Greek chorus, occasionally joining in, but mostly just witnessing what is going on.

Once again, I’ve used the ‘technique’ of squashing all the information that the players need on to the smallest possible space and scribbling it on a post-it note that the musicians can store on their instruments, or stick them in their pockets to collect fluff on the sticky bit.

The original title was ‘The George Lyle Option’, which refers to George’s calm and unshakeable insistence on his right to improvise freely in a piece no matter how many ‘instructions’ came from composers writing notes on bits of paper or conductors waving their arms about. Partly this came from his failing eyesight, but mostly it was a decision based on his musical, spiritual and philosophical convictions.

There is a short sung text from Confucius, and the soloists should play at the focus of a yin-yang sign drawn on the floor. And they should not think about George Lyle while they’re playing...
