about

Belmont Street (Raymond MacDonald and Jim McEwan)

George Lyle Lived on Belmont Street in the west end of Glasgow for more than 30 years and, when I moved into my first student flat, it was a few doors up from George. I never knew George then, but I loved passing his front window and hearing his exotic sounds. I soon realised that George was not only my neighbour but also a ‘go to’ bass player for visiting musicians and he was performing at concerts that were helping initiate me into the world of improvised music.

Seven years later George joined the band I formed with George Burt (Burt/MacDonald Quartet) and we toured, recorded and played together for 25 years. They were wonderful times and George’s kind, generous, humorous, easy-going nature were at the heart of the fun; that and his beautiful endless creativity.

This piece began as an idea to sample fragments of George’s bass from old recordings and combine them with live improvisations to create a short meditative soundscape with an ambiguous looping rhythm.

Jim, engineering the session, quickly contributed loads of ideas and the piece became a collaboration. The addition of an electromagnetic recording made by Jim, of the ‘energy’ outside George’s apartment on Belmont Street can be heard most clearly at the beginning and at the end, however, the whole track is infused with the ethereal sounds and energy of Belmont Street.
