about

Another Room (Una MacGlone)

I started thinking about a piece influenced by GL a few years ago, inspired by how his bass sound could be so identifiably his. Classical bassists play in different styles, for example, using very different bow strokes and phrasing for Mozart, compared with Richard Strauss or Telemann. I thought it would be cool to take this approach to GL’s playing, to break down some of the musical and technical aspects of particularly ‘GL sounding’ moments.

In the early years of GIO I would often sit next to or opposite him. I’d hear how differently he approached the instrument to me. He’d talk about how he liked my bowed sound and I’d talk about how I liked his plucked sound.

For the first section of Another Room, I listened to GL’s recordings and played back GIO moments in my head. I’ve used a mixture of notation and descriptive instruction to capture what I perceived to be particularly idiosyncratic GL episodes. The musicians have these represented on a graphic score which they can navigate as they choose. The second section is a recording of a Monk tune. GL, my husband Jim and I had a long chat about Monk one day when we were over to borrow a bass.

In the way that no one mode of transcribing a situation can capture the full picture or energy of it – taking a picture of a sunset will never be as good as seeing it – this piece is intended as a gentle remembrance of GL’s playing and sound.
